Sixpences or Tanners as they used to be known, are a well-known symbol of good luck, whether it be an ingredient in the Christmas pudding or being part of the bride’s ‘Something Old, Something New’ tradition, and it remains an RAF tradition to this day that sixpences are sewn behind pilot’s wings on their uniform. The sixpence design has changed three times since 1930 with each monarch’s reign. From 1926 to 1936, they featured a design of six oak sprigs divided by six acorns, 1937 to 1952, they featured a crown royal cypher; and from 1953 onward, they displayed a floral design of a rose, thistle, shamrock, and leek.
