What happened in 1934?
In 1934, historical events both in the UK and worldwide were taking place, some of which include:
- The first regular scheduled airmail service began in the UK between London and Paris
- The UK hosted the British Empire Games, a precursor to the Commonwealth Games
- The first streamlined steam locomotive, the “Silver Jubilee,” was unveiled by the London and North Eastern Railway
- The famous bank robber, John Dillinger, was shot and killed by FBI agents in Chicago
- The UK Prime Minister was Ramsay MacDonald, leading the country during a challenging time of economic depression
During 1934, two coins were in circulation in the UK:
- The threepence coin featured a portrait of King George V on the obverse and a thrift plant on the reverse. This small silver coin was equivalent to 1/80th of a pound and was a popular denomination for small transactions.
- The halfpenny coin was made of bronze and featured a portrait of King George V on the obverse and a seated figure of Britannia on the reverse. This coin was equivalent to 1/480th of a pound and was commonly used for purchasing small items like sweets and postcards.
