Why choose gold plated jewellery gifts?

In today’s market, solid gold jewellery is very much seen as a luxury that is available to few due to its high and ever-increasing value. This is why gold plated jewellery is a good and beautiful alternative. While this alternative is not made entirely out of solid gold, the 24 karat gold plating offers a charming and vibrantly warm gold finish that is a fantastic alternative for a fraction of the price.

Our jewellery is always beautifully handcrafted and makes for unique gifts, be it for anniversaries, birthdays, or in memory of a loved one. Gold plated jewellery, such as our lucky Sixpence Necklace collection, has the necklace chain, coin bezel and coin all thickly coated in a 24k gold finish, offering a vibrant and eye-catching accessory to any outfit.

Gold plated jewellery is created by expert craftspeople with a keen eye for detail, by skilfully covering a layer of Gold over a base metal and then completing an electrical or chemical deposition technique. Before the base metal is plated, the item has to be delicately cleaned and polished with utmost care to ensure a blemish free finish. This process involves a variety of steps such as electroplating and attaining the perfect finish every time takes years of practise and specialist knowledge.

Whilst commonly the main component in jewellery, solid gold is actually one of the softest metals when compared to others. Metal hardness is measured on the Mohs scale, solid gold sits at 2.5 – 3 Mohs, Diamonds at 10, Steel at 4.5 and Titanium at 6. As such, gold plated jewellery can often be much harder wearing than its solid gold jewellery counterparts as the underlying base metal is of a much harder composition.

How to care for gold plated jewellery

While gold plated jewellery is a hardwearing and extremely popular gift option, for him and her, like all metals it will, very slowly, oxidise aka tarnish. Tarnish is a natural and unstoppable reaction between the oxygen in the air and the metal of the jewellery. This is a completely expected process and there is no way to prevent it occurring. Well, you could move to space, where there is no oxygen but that’s a little drastic!

Here are some free tips on how to take good care of your gold plated coin jewellery:

  • Do not spray perfume directly onto gold plated jewellery – Perfume and other scented sprays may contaminate the metal of the jewellery which may lead to it becoming blemished or stained. If you use perfume regularly, it is recommended to spray it on your body, and let it dry before putting on the jewellery.

  • Remove gold plated jewellery before swimming – Sweat (acidic) and pool chlorine (alkaline) both create a chemical reaction with gold plated jewellery in a similar way that perfume does, so make sure to remove your jewellery before swimming or exercising.

  • Keep your gold plated jewellery clean – To clean your jewellery, use our specially formulated Heads and Tails Jewellery Polishing Cloths; a soft microfiber cloth used wipe our coin jewellery to help minimise oil build-up on the surface and remove any slowly occuring natural oxidation/tarnish.
